Description: Human rhinovirus (HRV) was first isolated from respiratory specimens of patients with respiratory infections by scientists like Pelon in 1956 by tissue culture. To date, more than 120 serotypes of rhinoviruses have been identified, making it the virus with the largest number of serotypes among human viruses. Rhinoviruses are the main pathogens causing common cold. They are responsible for nearly half of acute respiratory disease infections. HRV belongs to the Picornaviridae family and enterovirus genus, which is an envelope-less RNA virus. Based on structural and antigenic differences, HRV is classified into three types: A, B, and C. The HRV nucleocapsid is composed of VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4, which are the major structural proteins forming the viral particle. They are also the main components that bind to host surface receptors and stimulate antibody production.
