Complement component C5 is the fifth component of complement and part of the complement cascade, playing an important role in inflammation and cell killing. It is found in serum as an inactive protein composed of α and β polypeptide chains linked by disulfide bonds, but can be cleaved by one of two different C5 convertases (C4b2b3b or C3bBb3b) into two active peptides (C5a and C5b).
