Description: Adeno-associated virus serotype 2 (AAV2), is a member of the family Parvoviridae and is a small, non-enveloped virus with a diameter of approximately 20 nanometers. It contains a single-stranded DNA genome that ranges from 4.7 to 4.9 kilobase pairs in size.AAV2 is its tropism for specific cells within the body. It primarily targets the liver and kidneys but can also infect other organs such as the lungs, brain, and heart. This selective tropism has made it an attractive candidate for gene therapy applications, as it allows for targeted delivery of therapeutic genes to specific cells without causing widespread infection. AAV2 has been studied for its ability to serve as a vaccine vector. By introducing a harmless version of a virus or other pathogen into the body, AAV2 can trigger an immune response that provides protection against the actual disease-causing agent. Several AAV2-based vaccine candidates have been tested in preclinical and clinical trials for diseases such as hepatitis B, cancer, and COVID-1.
